The Peloponnese or Morea is a peninsula in south Greece.    The Peloponnese is a peninsula located at the southern tip of the mainland, 21,549.6 square kilometres (8,320.3 sq mi) in area, and constitutes the southern-most part of mainland Greece. It is connected to the mainland by the    Isthmus of Corinth, where the Corinth canal was constructed in 1893. Near the northern tip of the peninsula, there is another bridge, the Rio-Antirrio impressive suspended modern bridge, connecting it to western Greece and the Ionian highway. The peninsula has a mountainous interior and deeply indented coasts. Since antiquity, and continuing to the present day, the Peloponnese has been divided into seven major regions: Achaia (north), Corinthia (northeast), Argolis (east), Arcadia (center), Lakonia (southeast), Messinia (southwest), and Elis (west). Each of these regions is headed by a city. The largest city is Patras in Achaia, followed by Kalamata in Messinia. Access is easy via modern highways from Athens and Attiki, by ferry from Italy to the busy port of Patras or direct flights to the on-the-rise airport of Kalamata. Peloponnese is home to the world-famous, bespoke Greek Cote d’Azur on the north-east side in the region of Ermionida and Porto Heli. The Peloponnese is surrounded by the Greek sea, with lovely beaches, sandy and smooth coasts on the western part – rocky and lacy on its easternmost side.  It is no coincidences that the Peloponnese is very popular among travellers.
