Halkidiki

Halkidiki

Halkidiki is in the northern Greece and consists of a large peninsula, a popular vacation destination for its beautiful sand beaches, pine forests and blue-green waters. It resembles a hand with three 'fingers' (though in Greek these peninsulas are often referred to as 'legs'). From west to east, these are Kassandra, Sithonia    and Mount Athos, a special polity within Greece known for its Orthodox monastic community, off-limits to women since the 1500s, and has a few islands including Ammouliani and Diaporos.  Halkidiki borders north-west the Thessaloniki prefecture, which is also its gateway. Macedonia Airport in Thessaloniki is apx 90 km from the base of the Halkidiki « fingers » There are several summer resorts on the beaches of all three fingers where other smaller coastal towns and villages are located, Sani, Mola Kalava, Elani, Afytos, Nea Potidea, Chanioti in the Kassandra peninsula, Nikiti, Vourvourou, Sarti, Gerakini, Pefkohori, Diaporos island    in the Sithonia peninsula and Ouranoupolis at Mount Athos.
